Mardi Gras crafting for kids!

I love a parade! And king cakes… and jambalaya… and powder sugar covered pączkis (delicious Polish donuts)… I’m getting hungry over here! Mardi Gras is one of the biggest parties around, so why not celebrate in a family-friendly way at home! These colorful paper plate masks are a fun and easy way to craft up a party costume with just a few simple supplies you probably have laying around the house.

Not only do you end up with a festive mask, but this is also a great exercise to teach color theory and color combinations by mixing paints or seeing what happens when you layer crayon or marker colors. It is also a great opportunity to discuss the history of Mardi Gras and it’s traditions.

This craft is very versatile as it can be made with literally anything you can think of: paint, crayons, markers, rhinestones, clay, feathers, glitter, sequins, etc. The possibilities are endless! And if that’s not enough, whip up some matching necklaces by stringing some handmade clay beads or dried pasta!

How to Make a Mardi Gras Paper Plate Party Mask Craft for Kids

Here is what you’ll need:

• Paper plate
• Tempera paint, markers or crayons
• Construction paper
• Paintbrushes
• Craft stick
• Scissors
• Pencil
• Tape

Mardi Gras Paper Plate Party Mask Instructions:

1. Cut paper plate in half.

2. Draw, trace or punch 1″ eye shape.

3. Cut eye holes (with parental assistance).

4. Decorate!

5. Draw 4″ feather shapes on construction paper.

6. Cut feathers out.

7. Cut slanted slits down each side for feather fringe.

8. Tape feathers to the top of the mask.

9. Tape craft stick to back.

10. PARTY ON!
